Dillsboro to celebrate 125th anniversary with Heritage Day

Dillsboro will celebrate the 125th anniversary of its founding on Saturday, September 6 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. with live entertainment, demonstrations, vendors, exhibits, a special celebration train and the release of a new book, The Guide to Historic Dillsboro.

Heritage Day will feature old-time arts and crafts and will provide attendees a glimpse into life in the past.

Country Traditions to hold wine tasting fundraiser for the Appalachian Women’s Museum

Country Traditions will be hosting a wine tasting fundraiser for the Appalachian Women’s Museum Friday, July 25th from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Tickets are $10 each and may be purchased at the event. Ticket holders will receive samples of wine, gourmet food and a souvenir wine glass.

All of the profits from the tickets sales will go directly to the Appalachian Women’s Museum.

Dillsboro artisans win awards for their artistic contributions to western North Carolina

Two Dillsboro artisans, Susan Leveille and Brenda Anders, have been recognized for their contributions to preserving Western North Carolina cultural heritage and positively impacting the Dillsboro community.
Susan Leveille, a native of Jackson County, comes from a family of weavers and craftspeople. She has been weaving since she was a young girl and is honored to have such an incredible heritage that is an Integral part of the history of these mountains. Susan will receive the 2014 North Carolina Heritage Award in May, an award that recognizes excellence for musical traditions, artistry and craft work.
In a North Carolina Arts Council article, Governor Pat McCrory said, “I want to congratulate this year’s winners and thank them for helping preserve our cultural heritage. Our artistic history is the foundation of the quality of life that attracts so many people to North Carolina.”

Appalachian Women’s Museum calls for community involvement

ImageThe Appalachian Women’s Museum has big plans reaching farther than simply educating visitors, but telling the stories of those who made the area what it is today.

“The Mission of the Appalachian Women’s Museum is to gather, preserve, and share the stories of the women of Southern Appalachia,” said Tim Osment, former president and continuing board member of the Appalachian Women’s Museum.
